SUBJECT – VERB AGREEMENT

Agreement of Subject an Predicate

            The following sentences all have present tense verbs.

            Dr. Sheila Avery teaches.

            She is lecturing.

            Her students are listening.

            They don’t study.

            She doesn’t approve.

The singular subjects in the third person, like she and Dr. Sheila Avery, are followed
by the –s form of either the simple verb or an auxiliary.

Agreement and Compound Subjects

            A compound subjects may cause confusion in the agreement of the subject and predicate.

If the parts of the compound subject are joined by and, whether they are singular
or plural, the plural form of the verb is used.

The boys and girls are playing.

Mark and Helene approve.

If the parts of the compound subject are singular and are joined by such
connectives as or, nor, either …. Or, neither …. Nor, not only ….
But also, the singular form of the verb is used.

Either Juan or his friend is expected.

Neither Helene nor Alice works.

If the parts of the compound subject joined by or, nor, either …. Or, neither
…. Nor, not only …. But also are different in number of person, the
part nearest the verb determines the number of the verb.

Neither Helene nor her sisters work.

Not only the students but also Prof. Ober is waiting.

Agreement and Collection Nouns

            Occasionally, a noun that is singular in form may be used in
a plural sense.

            The crowed were waving their arms and shouting.

            The committee were arguing.

Usually, however, nouns like class, group, committee, jury, and so
oncalled collectives – are considered singular, and the –s form of the verb
is used with them.

            The committee is meeting.

            The jury has been dismissed.

Verb Forms and Auxiliaries That Do Not Change Form for Agreement

            The following sentences have past tense verbs.

The books came.                     They worked.

The book came.                       Marie worked.

I came.                                     We worked.

The simple past form of the verb does not change when the person or number
of the subject changes. The same thing is true of modal auxiliaries. The other
class of auxiliaries is made up of the ones in the illustration. They function only
as auxiliaries and do not change grammatical form in the way verbs do. These
are called modal auxiliaries. Some of them do function as the past tense form
of some of the other. May changes to might, will to would, and can to could
under the influence of a past tense verb in the main clause of the sentences
or occasionally, as with could, under the influence of a past adverbial.
In the following sets of sentences, the auxiliaries remain constant regardless
of the person and number of the subject.

            Prof. Ober will lecture at 9:00

            The student will listen.

            Mrs. Todd and her children must leave early.

            I must go to the bank.

            What can I do for you?

            Can they help?

EXAMPLE

The engineers and the company president are attending.

1.   Both the teacher and the students are reading.

2.   Neither Juan nor Tim is reading.

3.   Juan and Tim are talking.

4.   Either Juan or Tim is leaving.

5.   Prof. Ober and his students are vacationing.

6.   Mr. and Mrs. Avery are vacationing.

7.   Neither the students nor the professor is studying.

8.   Neither the professor nor the students are studying.

9.   Mrs. Todd, together with her daughters is shopping.

10. Mrs. Todd and her daughter are shopping.

TELLING ABOUT MY HOBBIES

I will introduce my self, my  name is Pramuditha Rizky,I am a person who has many hobbies. Such as reading, browsing the internet, hunting food, take a walk, listening to music, and others. but here, I'm not going to tell you about myhobby. Because time is limited. I will tell you the most I do.

The first one, I'll tell you about my hobbies are reading, I was the one who loves to read books, all the books I like to read. such as religious books, lessons, general knowledge, technology, internet, electronic, and others. but here I will focus on describing my hobbies are reading this with an example that I brought this book. This book entitled "The life of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)". tell in this book about the life of the prophet Muhammad. I like to read this book because in addition I find out about the life and journey of the Prophet, I was also able to improve my english language skills, because this book in English. in it there are also some difficult vocabulary in the story.

My second hobby is hunting food, I was a young boy full of curiosity. I want to try all the food in Indonesia, and if I get to the whole world. and I take pictures of food and region of origin. There Timpan cuisine Aceh, there are "Porridge kampiun" of Sulawesi, there tempoyak of jambi, betutu of Bali, and papede of Maluku.

My third hobby is listening to music, I love listening to music, to me a world without music is empty. With listening a music besides I get a lot of fun, I can get more spirit than before.  Usually,  I listening a music in the morning with a up-beat song. That’s can give me a soul and spirit for facing a activities along day. Beside that can give me enjoy my own self and forget my problem in a moment. Better than listening a music lonely, it’s prefer to listening a music together with our friends just like my habit. Because with doing like that can created a lively atmosphere. of almost all types of music I like, like pop music, dangdut, jazz, rock, Nasyid, Rock. However, the most I like is pop music. pop music singer who I like is like Rossa, Melly, Crisye, Charly, and many more that others.

Hobbies that I like are surfing the internet, almost more than half the days I spend my time surfing the internet. on the internet I usually open the facebook, I like facebook because it can find and communicate with my friends who are far away. I can chat with each other together and comment on the status of each. besides facebook, I also like to open another site that is, 4shared.com, I like to open the site intu search for music, software, crack, etc. I think that 4shared is complete, all I'm looking for there. on the internet I can learn many things like elekronika and others, I also like to open the site fastNcheap, there is a lot of articles about the knowledge of both computer software or hardware, the article is also very easily understandable for both beginner and advanced levels. on the internet I can also download the movies that I like, starting from the beginning until now, many sites that provide movies for download, such as cinema-21, hnmovies.com, or ganool.com, all provide the movies nice things.

I usually surf the Internet on campus and in my home, if at the campus I use Wifi to connect, if at home I use a modem to connect, in addition to the connection, I also use some fatherly support applications comfort while surfing, such as browser mozilla forefox, I like mozilla because it's easy and faster connections than on other browsers. I also use CCleaner to remove the history or the other so I could be faster in surfing the internet. for application downloader, internet download manager I use, I use it because it can accelerate when I download from the Internet, Internet download manager is very easy to use and very powerful, because it can get into the site modulation musi, movie, or would I download an application.

And my last hobby is to take a walk, I love it because it can refresh mymind after several days of activity. I usually take a walk on the weekend, I did that with my girlfriend or sometimes alone. many experiences and lessons that I get when take a walk. I usually take a walk in Semarang and the surroundingarea, like kudus, Jepara, kendal, starch, purwodadi, etc., I like the near future because of more efficient and a lot of nice scenery, such as mountains, beaches, hills and other .

My Daily Activity

Actually my activities of daily might not be too different from most people, my activities started when I got up early, then in the morning prayer subuh and then Ishower, change clothes and dress up and absolutely make up just a little excessivejust polishing powder, comb my hair, wearing my jilbab and wearing perfume, and do not forget to clean the room after that, I'm not the type to make breakfast everymorning, just occasionally, the rest just take vitamins and drink milk or eat bread.after that I was preparing to leave for college, I always have a schedule of lectures in the morning, sometimes I'm driven by my dad, but sometimes I also drive amotorcycle by myself, when I got on campus I meet my friends, telling stories, joking,studying together, if the time of break me and my friends go directly to therestaurant, and our favorite food is meatballs, usually within two days a week  we meals meatballs, finished eating we went back to college, started studying again until the afternoon, after that I usually go straight home unless there is a duty group then Ihave to go home a little late, when I got home I usually watch my favorite tv show, allresting body, after which the bath, 'Asr prayer and watching television again untiltime for magrib prayers, there is always a campus task every day, I was doing myusual evening days after sunset, while browsing the Internet, looking at books, go online to entertain myself, after I finished the task and then i watching television again, then evening prayers before bed, and slept for running my activities tomorrow.
That's a little story about my daily activities, there is nothing so special, but my spiritalways live every day.
